December is here!
I have three favorite times—or months—of the year. July, October, and December.
Why?
I think, to me, they (except for October, which is all about Hallowe’en) signify (note itals) being in the “middle” of two seasons, summer and winter, though, technically, less than half of December is in “winter.” But, when I was growing up in upstate New York, believe me, with first snow beginning to fall in October, and continuing on through into May, there was nothing “autumnal” nor “fall-like” about December! Of course, my birthday is in December, and—for the “Kid Year”—nothing beats “Kid Year” activities like Christmas, so I’m sure both of those affected my love for December (and I’ve always loved snow and all-things wintry)! At least once, our family actually went out caroling with others in the dark, frigid coldness of an Adirondack winter, not to mention all the other fun stuff we did, like snowshoeing, skiing, snowmobiling, or just (for me) hiking through the “back 40” of our and our neighbor’s heavily wooded properties, much like I described in ERO (well, except for the “weird shit”), in thick snow boots, wool pants, and everything else you typically wore back in the 60s and 70s. I love how the cold winds bite, the trees crack, the snow falls. The sound my boots (or snowshoes) make in the snow. How, with tons of fallen snow, all “the dirty” takes on that fresh, sparkling, “clean” look. The creation of ghostly vapors from my warm breath breathed out into frigid air….
I love the contrast in the seasons. Love how, in winter, the season becomes more…”pensive.” Inward directed. At least that’s what happens to me.
And, now, there’s snow falling all over this blog! I love it!

Would that I could, Wendy! :-] If you’re gonna have freezing temps, however, you WANT snow! It helps insulate the ground—and helps keep utility/water lines (pipes) from bursting, and, I believe, also insulates low-lying vegetation. And, if you ever get lost out in the WinterWunderLand, snow can also be used as an insulator of YOU (think igloos)!
And it just looks cool (pardon the pun)! 😛
Okay, so you have to shovel and snowblow….
Glad you finally got around to that last part, Frank! ;D And I AM fond of the snow gently falling on your blog right now!
Ha! Shoveling snow burns calories and builds character!
And you, too, can add gently falling snow to your WORDPRESS blogs, by going to Settings > General page (scroll to the bottom, make the selection), in your dashboard area! Then when you shovel the snow away before you post your blog, you, too, can also burn more calories and build character! 😛
I love December for the beauty of it, the winter without being terribly cold (usually), and my party – which I have to put off until Jan. But my favorite time of year is the summer. I love the heat. Don’t usually even need air conditioning until it is over 100 degrees.
And I love both, Karen! Including the contrast between the two! I frequently am in July or December and think about what the weather was in December or July, and try to “relive” or “place” myself back there for the contrast and other “metaphysical” mind games…like, “how can it be so damned cold when it was so damned hot?!” Contrasts. And beauty! The beauty of the Winter landscapes! There’s also something about the bare, desolation of it all….
I know Wendy doesn’t like the snow, but December has one BIG thing that she loves: CHRISTMAS! 🙂
