Reading. For Fun?!

What’s that?

I love reading, I really do, but I find it hard to carve out the time to do it anymore, and by “it” I mean for fun, for leisure reading. With a more than full-time day job, and with all the research reading I do for my own novels, saving the world, and helping little old ladies across busy intersections, it’s just très hard to do.

But.

I did manage to finally complete one novel I had been reading since, like, spring. This was Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep. It’s classic King fare in its relation.

So, occasionally, I do pick up a for-fun read, but it’s far and few between. Maybe after I release my next novel, and I again begin on a whole new manuscript, I’ll have a little more time.

You know, except for my research reading.

I always reserve nighttime as I go to bed and get ready to drift off for my pleasure reading. It helps put me in a mindset that doesn’t include obligations. I’m reading Amy Tan’s most recent book, a bit disappointing after her other ones but some pretty steamy sex scenes – the main character is a prostitute in China. I usually read a friend’s book, then another author’s book, then a friends, then another author’s book. I try to review the books I have strong reactions to (and always my friends’ books). But my stack is damn high. It overwhelms me sometimes. I’m a slow, careful reader, wallowing in amazing sentences, wondering, “Wow, how did he do that.” Always a learning experience. So at night I’m having a great time and learning. What could be better than that?

That sounds like a way to go, but I’m so wiped after long work hours, the gym, then dinner, that I crash not too far after sitting down to RELAX. And yes, that would be my first time TO relax, given my Oh-Dark-Thirty writing schedule (all of the above, basically about a 16-18-hour day). I’m just screwed. :-]

Reading for enjoyment is indeed something that easily falls by the wayside as we get older — a victim of our increasing busyness. All the more reason to carve some time out for it. Even 15 minutes a day beats none. I find that it really helps the creative mind to be taken to another world for a while, personally. Good post, Frank!

And that’s why it takes me some 6 months to get through a novel! :-]
