Energy Drinks—Really?

July 12, 2012 by fpdorchak

It absolutely floors me that twenty-year-olds need energy drinks.

That anybody between the ages of teenage-hood through their thirties would actually need this stuff.

But many seem to carry their drinks around like badges of honor. The stuff is marketed to their demographic. I’m not saying I was a Greek God in my 20s and 30s, but I certainly never even tried the stuff until into my late 40s. In my college days I did try (but never inhaled) bee pollen.

In my 20s and 30s were my most intense workouts. At one point I did four types of workouts within a single week and I got (for some period of time) ungodly small amounts of sleep.  Yet, during these intense training sessions did I use any “energy enhancers”?

Negative.

I’m not dumping on twenty- and thirty-year olds. I’m just curious as to the explosion of this entire phenomena. When I was in m 20s and 30s, I was quite energetic. And I know everyone’s metabolisms are different, lifestyle demands, et cet, but, still, to lump the demographic into one package and observe the amount of twenty- and thirty-year-olds downing the stuff astounds me. And it does so for another reason: I’ve tried a handful of them and not only do they taste like fricking acid (haven’t found one that tastes any kind of “good”), but in every case I experienced no “surge” of energy.

Zero.

Yet, I admit, on days when I’m absolutely beat, I still try them to see if maybe (pleeease, Lord in Heaven!) they can help…but I just do not and never feel any “lift” from any of them.

I literally get more effectiveness out of loads of caffeine (and by “loads,” I do mean a couple 12- or 16-ounce Mountain Dews, or a Starbucks Venti or Trenti iced coffees).

Note: even Starbucks is now getting into the “energy drink” biz, with Refreshers. Anyone but me find this just a tad more than ironic?

I’ve always had a fast metabolism, and even now though it’s not what it used to be (my appetite remains legendary within familial circles), it’s still higher than most people. So, does “running hotter” play in any of this, in that slower metabolisms are more easily affected?

So, okay, according to the [short] history of energy drinks, these things evolved on our end of the pond as a way to help college students pull all-nighters and young professionals to pack more hours into their days. I’ve tried the Gatorades. Jolt cola. Red Bull, Monster, and those ridiculously tiny bottles of Five-Hour Energy (both regular and hyped up), and probably one or two other brands.

Nothing.

I wish I could report something.

Buuut…I can’t.

But still…energy drinks…for twenty- and thirty-year-olds?

Floors me.

Perhaps what’s really at the heart of my issue is that many of today’s “youthful” are not all that healthy, which means they are vitamin or minerally (that a word?) deficient? Are all those “hyped-up” energy drink ingredients really making up for dietary deficiencies…not to mention invoking a “placebo effect” in many users (I read a National Geographic article about caffeine research, and some respondents claimed immediate energy gain after drinking, say, a Red Bull, when it’s scientifically proven the effects of caffeine on the human condition take one hour to feel.

An hour, people.

But, again, what does a twenty- or thirty-year-old need with this stuff?

Where is all that youthful energy? Why is it only found in bottles? Or is it even more basic than that, and it’s merely the marketing people are buying [into]. They may work on others (as advertised) but I’ve never found any one of them to work on me, and to find them marketed to the youth of society (as you might gather by now) utterly stupefies me. If those things really do work, then they need to be developed and marketed to the soccer moms and dads, those who work 60+-hour weeks. Firefighters. The military (heck, they already have caffeinated gum). Marathon runners (but they’ve already been doing this for centuries, so do they really need them?). Those are the people who need the help to keep going and going and never stop.

Not twenty-year-olds.

Smokers—PLEASE, Take Your TRASH With You

July 5, 2012 by fpdorchak

I can’t emphasize this enough, but smokers, please, take your trash with you.

I don’t really care whether or not one smokes, but I do find it curious that apparently many who do (based on personal observation) appear inclined to cast their trash onto the rest of us. So many smokers take issue when others get on their case about smoking…yet so many smokers cast their butts out windows, onto streets, and into fields.

Why?

What makes so many of you feel you can throw your trash in our faces?

The average smokers inhales 22 or so cigarettes per day. That’s a handful of trash every day. And I’ve never in all my life, ever seen someone toss their butt on the ground, grind it out–then pick it back up and take it with them to properly dispose.

Well, okay, maybe once, my unconscious seems to protest…I do seem to recall one such memory, with no specifics.

But, how would any of you like it if I came into your life and threw used cat litter, used toilet paper, rotten and rancid meat, at your feet?

What you do is no better. Trash is trash. You may think it small and inconsequential, but it quickly adds up.

Additionally, what you do—flicking your ashes and tossing your butts into the wild–can cause fires. And this is what got my interest, having dealt with the Waldo Canyon and other fires in our backyard. This topic came back to mind when one of the firefighters at a press conference brought up the topic, then also added that it’s also littering, which is wrong.

So, if you’re gonna smoke, could I ask that you kindly take a portable butt-can of some kind with you, or use the vehicle’s ash tray instead of the window?

Thank you.

Let’s Talk About The Bedroom…

September 19, 2011 by fpdorchak

Okay, admittedly this probably isn’t something you really want to read about first thing in the morning, let alone a Monday morning (when this was posted), but I’m just gonna come out and talk about that big-assed elephant in the room, because it affects everyone’s performance.

Beds.

I bet the sheets are still warm, am I right? Pillow still formed from your dream-laden head? Significant other probably doesn’t even know you’re gone. In fact, think about what awaits you today…then think about from where you just came.

Oooh, easy choice, isn’t it?

So…what’s keepin ya from just dumpin that coffee and slinking your still tired widdle body back up those creaky widdle steps and gently and oh-so-decadently sliding once more between the comfort of those ever-tempting, ever-beckoning bed sheets and pillows?

Oh, the morning can be a cruel mistress, can it not?

Sleep.

We all need it, unless you’re a supernatural creature or a rock. The amount of time is constantly contested, but every human being needs to sleep…or they’ll die. That simple.

Writers–and most of the population, I’m finding–are so dang sleep deprived (and I’m talking how one feels, not so much the number of hours one gets), it would behoove us that what sleep we do get…is quality.

So, we return to the elephant.

How’s your bed? Is it comfy? Have sufficient firmness? Bed bug free (sorry, had to press that button just for the pure shock value)?  Well, if your answers aren’t satisfactory, you might wanna consider a new one. I know, times are tough, but some things you just can’t live without, and getting a good night’s sleep is one of them. I’m no doctor–don’t even play one on TV–but if you’re not waking up fully rested, your body creaky, it might be time to reevaluate the performance of something else in your bedroom….

Now, have you been shopping for one lately?

Good, fricking Lord. There is so much out there and so little help. For something as important as sleep, you’d think there’d be all this research and concrete information available. Everywhere.

Negative.

Chiropractors can’t even agree. Doctors, same boat. Heaven forbid you ask a salesperson….

Sure, there’s stuff all over the Internet, but nothing of any real value in any of the stores we visited. Just what kind of bed do you need?

Hard. Soft. Medium. Princess-and-the-pea. Sponge or springs?

There is no one answer to that. There just isn’t. We’ve looked. Everyone’s answer contradicts the previous and the next. I truly feel that there’s more than one type of bed that can work for a body. All I know is that one day, my wife and I walked into one store after we’d slept around town (heh-heh–had to get that in there, too)…on different store display mattresses, and, well, I’m not embarrassed to say…one of them…ummmm…well…uhhh…

Spoke to me.

I had finally found the one that–when I lie down in it–I felt like I was being seduced into sleep! Oh, it was unrestrained and totally self-indulgent!  I tell you, I had to fight to keep my eyes open! And all this while all manner of people walked by the showroom! It was that comfortable. I had zero control over my instantly heavy eyelids. I didn’t care who saw me uncontrollably doze off, all wakefulness sucked right out of me! I felt embraced within the arms of angels! Enfolded within heavenly clouds! Hushed, pacified, and calmed by agents of preternatural forces!

We had been checking out many a bed–and believe me there is no substitute to this, you simply have to physically go to each store location and it’s (again, pardon the pun) exhausting, but you have to lie down on each bed-of-interest and be there for many (I forget what it is, but it’s more than 2 seconds) minutes and see if the dang things work for you. It takes time for the bed and your body to mold to each other. Even after you buy one, it’ll take something like a month or so before you “acclimatize” to your new sleeping companion (so find a company that will give you a 30-day try out period when you do buy one). But, you just gotta do it.

We did the Internet research. Asked the opinion of many, even watched YouTube videos on how to pick the “right bed for you!” It is not the intent of this post to give you all the tips and whatnot, but to get you to think about whether or not you are getting quality sleep for the sleep you do get. Research, then get out there and sleep around…the floor models. It’s the only way. If you and your significant other can’t agree, consider a Sleep Number bed. We liked Simmons Beautyrest.

But in this crazy world we live in, where more and more is asked of us, and less sleep is fast becoming the norm, it is imperative that what sleep we do get be quality. Deep. Refreshing. Before this bed, when I awoke, bing, bang, BOOM!, I was awake and out of bed. Now…I tremble with impending separation anxiety.

Five more minutes?

Five’ll get you fifteen…then an hour later….

Oh, how the sultry, silver-tongued Siren does beckon!

Um, excuse me….
